However, you can’t apply acrylic paint over existing oil paint without a proper bonding primer—otherwise, the new finish will usually scratch right off.

Typically, about 70% of the project involves careful preparation, including hanging plastic, protecting surfaces, and setting up the work area properly. The remaining 30% is the actual removal of the acoustic material. Removing popcorn ceilings over plaster is generally easier than removing them from drywall.

One quick note: if your ceilings currently have built-in heater coils, there’s about a 95% chance the surface will need new texture or a skim coat afterward. This helps hide imperfections and ensures a smooth, uniform finish.
